I am planning on doing a migration installation from AIX 4.3.3 to AIX 5.1 (ML05).

The machine was originally installed to AIX 4.3.0, and was since migrated to 4.3.3. However, an instfix -i shows that 2 of the MLs were not completed, and were missing filesets:

All filesets for 4.3.1.0_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4.3.2.0_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for AIX43ML were found.
All filesets for 4.3.1.0_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4.3.2.0_AIX_ML were found.
Not all filesets for 4.3.3.0_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4330-02_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4320-02_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4330-03_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4330-04_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4330-05_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4330-01_AIX_ML were found.

All filesets for 4330-09_AIX_ML were found.
All filesets for 4330-10_AIX_ML were found.

Should I worry about fixing these before upgrading to 5.1?

Do this also..

#lppchk -v

This should show nothing and go to the next line, that means all your filesets are cool. If it does show some then you can probably be safe in removing them via smit.

What that generally means is that some filesets for parts of AIX that weren't installed to begin with weren't installed by the ML upgrade either.

I use "oslevel -r" to determine which ML my system thinks it's at.

But 4 to 5 is a different beast anyway.

I always go ahead and install the filesets to bring everything current.

I vaguely remember that the ML 7 had a bug that it reported the Java filesets as not being installed when they indeed were installed.

I just did the same Migration. The only issue I had was 3rd party apps (like RPM) that I installed that were giving fits to the installer. I removed the 3rd party software and migrated without issue.

Good luck.

Hi ,

The steps you need to take when doing a migrate install from AIX 4.3 to 5.1 are as follows :-

1. You need to install APAR IY17981 to upgrade xlC.rte from 5.0.0.0 to . 5.0.2.x The server will not boot properly without the upgrade to the C compiler

2. Ensure your server is at maintenance level10 or greater

3.make sure all software is committed

4. do lppchk -v for any errors , fix if you get any errors

5. upgrade all necessary firmware check on IBMs site )

for system firmware , disk firmware , SSA firmware if any ,
tape drive fimrware , make sure you are at the latest level / the level recommended depending on the hardware you have in your machine .

6. Disable any backups you may have running or any jobs in cron that run frequently.

7. create mksysb of your system

8. unmirror the root disk , so that you have a disk to boot from which contains system as it was before the upgrade.

9. Change the bootlist if needed to have rmt0 cd0 hdisk? hdisk?

10. Make sure you have a consle connected to the server , load AIX 5.1 Cd 1 of 5 in the cd drive and reboot machine

11. Select migrate install
and select the disk to install to

12. You'll be prompted to change the CD's so keep an eye on the console.

13. when migrate has completed , take CD out and you'll be booted into config menu, accept license agreement and then load ML 5 CD , select update all to load Maintenance level 5

Note:- If your server has the latest firmware , ML ,installed the upgrades should be a doddle, but check that first .
