I need to automate the start and stop of my custom apps. I tried putting S99* and K11* scripts in the rc.2 directories. The system shutdown stops everything properly but while coming back up it executed the stop apps scripts again. Any ideas ??

That is how AIX's rc script is designed. I looks for all K*'s and runs them first, then it runs S*'s. The thought is if you are changing run levels then it's best to stop and restart everything. The script isn't very intelligent so it doens't account for initial run versus actual rl change. You could always modify it to only do the kills only if this is an actual rl change.

How can I do that in the script to detect if there is an actual rl change.

you can put those scripts in rc and rc.shutdown files and link put these entries to startup and shutdown scripts
