Apolgize in advance, I'm new to this

We recently changed a sharp printer with another sharp printer, copied the IP settings but can't get the new printer recognized by the remote host. Can ping the IP address of the new printer in the same physical location, but when telnet in from host server, can't get a response to ping. Tried changing the IP address to another device and did get ping response to make sure it wasn't the network connection. The printer works fine for all other applications except AIX.

If the settings are the same on the new printer as the old and it was working fine what are we doing wrong.

I'm not sure about this procedure in AIX, but on other UNIX flavors you sometimes need to remove the previous ARP entry for that IP address.

# arp -d {specific IP address}

At some level, the O/S has already determined the MAC address of the printer based upon the IP address. The new printer has a different MAC address, and that needs to be rediscovered by the server.

The printer guy just called and said that the MAC address needs to be changed at the firewall (his guess).

By typing in # arp -9 {IP address} will clear the old MAC address? Then when the server sees the new printer it will recognize the new MAC address and re-set itself on the server?

Check the man page for your O/S:

# man arp

My post said "arp -d {IP address}", not "arp -9 {IP address}"

What does this mean?

# arp -d 192.168.3.13
0821-238 arp: Entry 192.168.3.13 (192.168.3.13) was not found in local arp table
