Hello,

I have a problem with a aix machine, I did by accident a rm * in the /etc-directory and then the system hangs, When I tried to restart the system it hangs with ledcode 518, which means remote mount of the root (/) and /usr file systems during boot did not complete sucessfully.

When I start in maintenance mode and start shell before mounting, I cant execute any commando, for example ls gives the msg: /usr/sbin/ls not found.

Is there any solution for this problem or must I use a backup to recover my system?

Thanks in advance,
Rudy

just a thought - had you reset the shell root uses? The root user should always use a statically linked shell (held in /sbin) rather than a dynamically linked one.

If it's the statically linked one, you should have some built-in shell commands to use - you could try to manually mount /usr, and if you're feeling particularly energetic sit down and drag the relevant files of the mksysb tape..

restore -s4 -qxdvf/dev/rmt# ./etc

...but I wouldn't hold your breath ;-)

Of course, you could just load up the mksysb...

Cheers,
Dave V.

If you did a rm * from /etc.................. that is pretty much everything...passwords, security, important rc files etc...............

My guess it is easier to restore from a mksysb and call it a day....

You can try and do a selective restore of /etc................but my guess is that when
it gets to the security stuff it will gack and you will be kicked out...........
