Please excuse my AIX Illiteratacy. Is it possible to have a NAS storage device that is capable of performing automated backups backup specific files on an AIX server? I have 4 windows servers that get backed up this way and the manufactuer of the backup device tells me that it is capable of backing up across OSs and AIX is a compatible OS but I do not know how to make the AIX server's files visible to the network.

how about Netapp ? You have your storage on a netapp box, NFS export to AIX.Netapp takes snapshot backups at regular intervals,backup completes within seconds.

RMGBELGIUM - Do you use NetApp with AIX? What do you think of it? Just NAS or both NAS and SAN?

We're and IBM ESS/DS shop, but have considered NetApp for a tiered approach.

Someone else told me to set up the NAS as an FTP server and script the AIX files thru FTP to the NAS and just map network drives for the Windows servers to the NAS. Will the two different platforms live on one drive partition?

@hfaix : I recently deployed an iscsi AIX-netapp solution ( I'm a Netapp consultant ) , no complaints received so far , customer is happy with performance.If however, you are "ibm-minded" , but like netapp , you can choose for ibm N-Series, they are netapp boxes sold and supported by IBM.

@AIXilliterate :
you can export a volume for nfs, and also place a cifs share onto this volume, this way , the AIX files will be visible on the windows when mapped...

We use a Netapp to host our Solaris Images. I suppose we could have our mksysb's stored there also, but haven't gotten around to it. I think it is a fantastic (although pricey) product.
