For the cheap man's way of providing multi-pathing to Hitachi devices refer to HDS solution HDS38557. This provides the ODM definitions to allow fail-over, but not load-balancing. Even though it refers to the 9990V, I have 9980V on AIX 5.2 and 5.3 and it works fine on both. I paste a snipit of the solution:
9900V Support for IBM AIX MPIO ODM 5.4.0.0I,

AIX MPIO support for 9900 & 9900V Hitachi Disk Arrays:
1. Purpose:
This ECN M097 notifies partner of new information regarding connectivity of
disk subsystem for MPIO on AIX5.2 as shown below.
2. Certified configurations:
AIX 5.2 + MPIO default PCM with Lightning 9900V (RAID450)
is supported under the following conditions:
1) AIX 5.2 ML03(IY49013) with APAR IY56769 and IY58170
2) 9900V Micro Version should be 21-06-37-00/00-01(V06+1) or higher.
3) ODM : HTC_MPIO_ODM_5400I
4) Supported HBA : FC6227, FC6228, FC6239
5) Both of direct and switch configuration are allowed.
Brocade Silkworm 3800(3.1.2/3.1.2a) and McData ED-6064(5.02) is used
6) MPIO:
Failover only.
Load balance is not yet supported in current AIX level.
Manually failback(Auto Failback is not supported in current AIX level)
Combination of MPIO and HACMP is not yet supported in current AIX level.
7) HDLM and MPIO are exclusive on same AIX server for Hitachi devices.
8) hcheck_interval parameter should be set to 0.
This setting brings disabling MPIO health check and automatic failback.
Manual intervention is required to reconnect recovered failure path.

I hope that this helps.
