I am a Sr level AIX admin who has a good general knowledge of UNIX. My specialty is AIX. My new job entails work with HP/UX and Solaris. What book can I search for that can help me to transtion my mnd for the IBM World to and Open world of UNIX per say?

pdperk,

I made the transition from HP-UX to AIX and then to Solaris. HP and AIX are more similar from the sysadmin point of view than either are to Solaris (in my opinion) because HP and AIX have the concept of volume groups. That just threw me for a while when I started with Solaris.

Disk naming conventions are more similar between HP and Solaris than AIX -- there are no hdisks in either HP or Solaris, but cxtxdx (with an extra sx in Solaris!)

I would recommend the O'Reilly book Essential System Administration, which you probably already know. If you know the command in one system, you can look it up and see what the authors have to say about how the command works in other OSs.

There also is a web site called the Rosetta Stone for Unix. here's the URL: This is very good for when you know the command in one OS and not in another.

Good luck.

P.S. Just keep coming to these Tek-Tips sites for the three OS. You would be amazed how much you can learn about the two new OS.
