my sendmail comes with aix 5.3. i tried to configure sendmail to work exactly as the current running, lower-version 4.x.x. so far, i copied all parameters that are working with lower 4.x but having problem:

when i tried this command:

#> mail -s "YAHOO" lulu@yahoo.com > /etc/inittab

it just exited as normal and seemed to be sent, but when i checked at /root directory - i can see the email in the queue and NOT sent out.

#> mail <enter>; shows current user's mail/s

i checked my files under /etc, namely; hosts, sendmail.cf, resolv.conf and /etc/mail/relay-domains - exactly same as in the lower 4.x, that's working.

i even added the mail server @ sendmail's DR line.

anyone has a bright idea/s?

Did you refresh the sendmail daemon after modifying sendmail.cf?

refresh -s sendmail

also, I hope this was a typo in posting here at TT (and not while testing):

or else you obliterated your inittab file. Better not use important files for tests like this. One of these days you will make that mistake... Generate a tempfile for (mail) tests like so:

#> lptest | mail -s "YAHOO" lulu@yahoo.com

And DON'T work as root! (unless you really really have to)

HTH,

p5wizard

I think you meant

#> mail -s "YAHOO" lulu@yahoo.com < /etc/inittab

And if you did the above as p5 said, try to look for a recent mksysb backup to restore your inittab coz it is corrupt! you server won't reboot!

Khalid

thank you guys... yup, it will corrupt the inittab file. but good thing, as of now - it's still in-tacked.

it's a typo err p5wizard - it's the inittab file created for testing purposes only under /root NOT /etc.

i'm taking all the advises... and never used or configured sendmail before.

i did refresh the sendmail daemon, p5wizard. :(

here's what i got from the queue, a returned email:

root pts/0 $ mail

I think you need to define a mail gateway or whatever it is called to yahoo.com!

I had the same problem before and i had to define hotmail.com as my outgoing mail server in /etc/hosts

like if my mail server was 129.168.10.1

Then you have to have an entry in /etc/hosts like this

yahoo.com 129.168.10.1

Regards,
Khalid

Are the sendmail versions between servers the same? I kind of doubt it.

I'd take a peak at the original /etc/sendmail.cf on the AIX 5.3 server and then modify it as needed.
