Totally at a loss. learning stage with Aix

I am trying to update software on my system so I can try installing tightvnc. When I try to install X11.samples.* packages I keep getting errors such as 0511-119 missing header block ./usr/lpp/x11/Xamples/programs/xmh/pick.c and 0503-464 failed for usr part of the following filesets X11.sample.doc for example. I looked in that directory and have everything up to the point of programs but no xmh directory. I looked on my 4.3.3 system and that directory exists for it.

I figured maybe there was an installation issue when this system was originally set up (this is just a test box), so I removed all packages related to X11 and anything that needed X11 as requisites. Then I reinstalled all software packages with update_all under smit, everything seemed to go fine except it could not install the X11.samples.* (* meaning the multiple filesets associated with X11.samples header).

So what happens is when I try to do a make world for tightvnc I am missing all kinds of directory and files so I can not compile.

At this point I really don't care about the vnc issue I would rather try to understand where to get the needed X11 packages so I can load the X11.samples filesets.

I love to learn but man I am banging my head against a wall about 10 feet thick at this point. Any direction or input would greatly be appreciated and I could care less how relevant you in your guru mind set may think it is, give me all info and I will run with it.

p.s I did do maintenance update to -09 but without the packages loaded it will not update them correct?

Thanks

CA

Have you installed both X11.base.lib & X11.base.rte?

Mike;

Both X11.base.lib and X11.base.rte are installed.

Keep the suggestions and questions coming, I am willing to blow the system up to figure out what is going on.

Thanks

What are you installing X11.samples filesets from? CD? files on disk? Looks to me you have a corrupt file you are installing from. Perhaps you can try a different CD set? Or copy the install files over again?

If an FTP transfer is needed to get the files on the AIX disk, remember it is absolutely necessary to use BINARY transfer!

HTH,

p5wizard;

You hit the nail on the head. On Friday I tried a different cd volume 1 and X11.samples install went fine. So my problem was the cd I was using.

Thanks
