I am very new to AIX! I am trying to connect to a box that cannot be found in dns. I thought if the box is not found in dns it goes to the /etc/hosts file to look it up (it is in there!) this is not happening in my case. I am told by dns server that the name box I put in is not found and then returned to my prompt. Could I be missing something?

What's in your resolv.conf file?

Cheers

Have you tried using the simple hostname and the fully qualified name to see if that makes a difference when using the nslookup query?

Examples:
hostname: sparky
fully qualified: sparky.companyxyz.com

in my /etc/resolv.conf file is:

nameserver <ip address>
nameserver <ip address>
domain <domain name>
search <two domain names>

and yes, I have used hostname and receive the correct hostname back

womp,
What I meant is to try the following:
'nslookup sparky'
'nslookup sparky.companyxyz.com'

Also, sometimes I have seen weird things when there are aliases with official name in /etc/hosts.
Example is to have
xx.xx.xx.xx sparky spark1

Where the spark1 is an alias and sparky is the official name.
You can also try adding a test line to /etc/hosts for a host, give it any name and check that it works. It is possible there is a problem with the hosts file.
