Once 5.3 has been installed and the server reboots, the console is 'hanging/stopping' after the message:
Refreshing syslogd....
0513-095 The request for the subsystem refresh was completed successfully

The server is contactable and looks to be OK. Having said that, it looks like some of the processes within /etc/inittab have not started.

Could the problem be with the actual console (InfoWindowII 3153), even though is has allowed input/output throughout the migration process, or is it something missed before the upgrade ?

Firmware was upgraded.

thanks,

Madra

It sounds a bit like the console is not configured correctly.

Is there a graphics card in the system? Is it supported at AIX 5.3?

Did the system used to boot to the CDE before the upgrade?
Is X11 installed?

Try a boot to sms and check the console is configured, then boot and if you can find a way in, I presume over the network from your post, check the console settings with lscons AND smit.

Also check the swcons, chcons and consloe links at the bottom of the above page.

Check login is enabled for the console in prtconf.

You said not all inittab entries were processed?

Start looking in there, perhaps a start script "hangs" and the entry is marked as "wait", so all the following entries join the waiting line...

telnet or ssh into the box and run

who -a

That should give you some info as to which inittab entry last run completely and which didn't.

also:

ps -ef|grep rc

or grep for any suspected start script.
