On attempting to create a new volume group on a new physical partion i receive the following message:
VARONVG: The volume group cannot be varied on because there are no good copies of the descriptor area.
Anyone seen this error before, how did you resolve it?

Yes! I have on SAN. You are in trouble, but what I do is I keep the maping file of the logical volumes, using

lsvg -m datavg > file directiong the output to file. If we cannot rebuild the descriptors, we will need to delete the volume group, and recreate the volume group, and using the map data, with the mklv recreating the descriptors to the volume group.

First though try to delete all the disk and datapaths and run cfgmgr.

After that importvg -y volumegrp

if it is a HA environment you will need to add -V major number
