Going to upgrade AIX 4.3.3 to 5.2 server.

This server is hooked up to the EMC.

Here is my approach:
1) mksysb
2) unmount everything
3) varyoff the vgs
4) remove the EMC software.
5) Perform a migration install (AIX 5.2)
6) reinstall EMC software
7) varyon the vgs

any comments/suggestions?
thx

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, the other vgs are being backed up by TSM.

I am just a little worried, after 5.2 is installed and I put the new EMC 5.2 ODM entries, I won't see any hdiskpower devices...

I wish I could help, but I'm not familiar with EMC configs. Good Luck.

you should update tothe latest emc code for the ODM drivers and powerpath you will have a much more robust system withthe newer EMC software

Thanks plamb!

I think I got my EMC help from you before :)

Like I said,

I am just a little worried, after 5.2 is installed and I put the new EMC 5.2 ODM entries, I won't see any hdiskpower devices...

you might have to input the lic key for powerpath I had a few that lost the key during upgrade of the O/S

Hi,

which FC Adapter is installed. If you are using EMC Fiber Kit, you have to migrate the adapter to an FC6227.

plamb: phhhew, thanks for that info! I knew there were going ot be some gotchas.

r5027: its a standard IBM FC

$ lsdev -Cc adapter | grep FC
fcs0 Available 17-08 FC Adapter
fcs1 Available 2D-08 FC Adapter

Manufacturer................001D

is there anything else I should document?

make sure the latest microcode for the adapter is installed

Actually, now i am in doubt how to remove the EMC software + Logical Devices.

According to the EMC DOCS this is what it says:
1) powermt display dev=all (check for good paths)
2) powermt remove
3) rmdev
4) run powermt display dev=all again
5) powermt save

And I guess I remove the EMC software with installp or smitty

Now, after I put on AIX 5.2 and put the new EMC software. I guess I have to redefine my logical devices...

Hi,

"$lscfg -vl fcs0" shows you microcode version. Its the line with (ZB). Ignore first 3 letters > 3.30X1 is microcode version on my FC adapter

Deinstalling powerpath can be done with "installp -u EMCpower" Before you can do this, device powerpath0 must be removed. To can do this, you must kill a daemon from EMC, which is using the device. You must also delete all hdiskpower devices and all hdisks which are on the EMC. Remove FC cabel, make OS update, install powerpath, plug in fc cable, run emc_cfgmgr, mount fs and all is ok. If you want, you can also export all vgs and import vgs after upgrading. I suggest you hire someone from EMC for your upgrade. It's done in 4 hours.

r5027:
thanks! post worth saving!

But why remove the FC cables? I thought whenever you do a AIX upgrade, you must have ALL of your hardware connected and powered on.

Also, there is NO emc deamon on my system. I think you mean for EMC monitoring.

If I remove these Hdisks with rmdev command, the data still exists on the EMC system right? The data will always be there unless I do a rm -rf /foo/ on the mounted LV from EMC (#1 concern)

If AIX "sees" FC disks with multiple paths, it will use MPIO driver to turn these disks into generic multipath I/O hdisks, which you then have to remove before you can go and install powerpath software.

Hi,

on my systems "ps -ef" shows a process "/usr/symcli/bin/symapisrv start". If you have no symcli Solutions Enabler installed, its not running. If you remove a hdisk with rmdev, data ist not removed. There is another point. Powerpath 3 uses SCSI-3 commands. This must be enabled on your Symmetrix. Only EMC can do this.

r5027:

" Remove FC cabel "

VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

I overlooked this, and it costed me over 2 hours. LED just display "0C31", and the system just hold there.

thanks again!
