AIX 4.2 CDE 1

Was/is CDE available on AIX 4.2? Just got back from 4.3 class and really liked it, but the option to use it in Smit on 4.3 is not there on my 4.2 server. Just started this job a month ago and am new to Unix. Started to compile a list of to-do's and one is upgrading, but I need to understand things a bit better first.

As long as you have installed the filesets, have a graphics card and a graphics console... (or some other means like Xstation, or emulation) you can have
CDE on 4.2..... You need to load the filesets though of your graphics card for
4.2 and also anything listed below under X11 and DT ....
on the GXT130P Graphics Adapter (#2830) card...it required not only the *.X11 filesets by the *.rte filesets for that card....so make sure you get them all....

Is there any reasons for not loading these filesets? I'm going to use Hummingbird Exceed from my PC to manage the server. But before I load them, would it goof up anything to load them?

no reason, unless the console is a vt100 or non graphic...

then you need to turn graphics off on the console or it will cause you grief.


This will turn graphics off on the console only:

cp /usr/dt/config/Xservers /etc/dt/config/Xservers
chmod 755 /etc/dt/config/Xservers

vi /etc/dt/config/Xservers

put a # in front of last line

# :0 local local@console ......

Very cool! I'll try it this weekend and let you know. I have so much to learn! I've worked with Microsoft servers for years, but no Unix background at all. Very weird feeling starting from ground zero again. This forum is helping a lot.
