Airport Connection to RCA TimeWarner Modem... help!!

has anyone had any luck connecting an airport directly to a cable modem and establishing a wireless network? i have no luck getting it up and running. directly connecting the modem to my friend's PC notebook works, but we are not able to go wireless yes. very frustrating for something that is coined as being so easy! any help would be very much appreciated.
