So many times I have read about deleting AIPREPS to get rid of an assortment of problems in Illustrator. Amazingly in the two years I've used AI I have never had to do this...until last night. The lower half of my effects menu had disappeared and I knew this would be solved with the PREFS solution. I was kind of annoyed because I knew this would reset my palette positions (and theres no way of saving your workspace as far as I know). I run dual monitors and have the majority of all palettes displayed at all times so it would take a bit of re-setting up to get it just how it was. I took a screen capture of my setup to make life easier. So anyway, I shifted the AIPREFS file to the Desktop and re-opened AI, problem solved. Just for a lark I decided to shift my AIPREF file back to its original place to see what happens and to my amazement the Effects were now all intact and the problem of having to reset palette positions was avoided.

Long story short, if you have a palette setup you like in AI and encounter problems try shifting your PREF folder then moving it back rather than deleting it. Probably won't work every time.

Ooooh, that's a good one D. I use dual monitor too and after useing a certain arrangement for so long it becomes a reflex. I can never seem to recreate it just right since I have just about every palette open over there. Heck, I never thought of the screen shot either. star for you

Thanks jAQUAN, I hesitated to write that as I thought everyone might think it was too obvious, but just to know it was useful to someone is great!!! See ya.

I havn't got illustrator in front of me to check this but can you not keep a copy of your prefs file somewhere else, just in case.
