I have read several different descriptions of how I should be (or shouldnt be) using the AIO VPs with informix. I am running a version of unix that supports KAIO and I do have it turned but I also have 3 AIO VPs running.

Whats the proper way to do this? Running 9.40.

Hi,

KAIO (Kernel Asyncronous I/O) available to you if:

1. Your Informix Engine is 7.x or above.
2. Your OS platform supports it, to validate this claim, check release notes found at $INFORMIXDIR/release/*
3. You use raw partitions / device files as chunks.

If your OS is configured by Installing the special device driver meant for KAIO operation (Very OS platform specific), you may introduce an environment variable as below:

export KAIOON=1

You need to bounce (shutdown & startup) the database server, before it can use the changed environment.

To check for the active KAIO threads:
onstat -g ath

To disable KAIO mechanism and revert to AIO:
export KAIOOFF=1

Shriyan
