We have lots of images that need to be viewed only. Rather that having to buy the full product are there any viewers to display .ai files?

Dom:

There's a viewer called "ghostview", do a google search for it to get details.

Better yet, IME the vast majority of Illustrator files can be viewed using the Acrobat reader, though, because they are saved with the default setting for pdf compatibility turned on.

I just opened loads of ai files with Acrobat reader, thats fantastic I had no idea.

Thanks!!!!!!!

I will have a look into Ghostview too, I need the same with psd files but I think viewers are easier to find for them!

Acrobat and Ghost view open all the stuff created in house but most of the ai files from outside only display a few parts of the image.

So its very handy for most of the work here!

Dom:

I'm glad I opened up a world of possibilities for you there.

The native language of Illustrator files was changed in version 9 to *.pdf, and this essentially means anyone anywhere could change the extension of most *.ai files to *.pdf and open them (Important to know in case someone opening them is not well-versed in computer tricks like right-clicking a file to choose the appropriate program, because a computer will not automatically figure out how to open an *.ai if Illustrator is not installed).

The *.pdf compatibility varies, depending on the type of file content, but I find it to work well in a surprising number of cases.
