I have a card with a x1x2x4 agp slot.
Can I put a x8 card in there and it will work at x4 or can I only use a x4 card?

I'm wanting to upgrade my video card any maybe upgrade my motherboard at a later date - and obviously want to know whether it's worth waiting and gettin both at once as the cards I like are all x8

Just make sure the card supports AGP 4X (I am pretty sure that most of them do, or at least the major name ones do that I have looked at).

Once you read the specs on the card it's more than likely it will support AGP 4X and you should be fine.

Good luck!

Yes, most AGP 8x cards (or least all that I've seen) are backwards compatible to work on AGP 4x slots. However, anything older (like 1x or 2x slots) use different voltages that most 8x cards can't handle.

Since your slot can run at 4x, then you should be OK.
