Agere modem problem

Hi:

I have recently installed an Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem (56Kbps V.92) as I wanted my computer system to be a full-featured answering machine. However, when I try to make a call from the PC I get the following: “Modem Initialization Error (-1).

Can someone offer a solution to this problem? I am using FaxTalk Speakerphone 6.05 and everything else works but for the problem that I described earlier.

First, can you try another modem (don't worry about the other programs, we just want to check the modem)? It may be just a defective unit. These Agere (Lucent) modems are cheap, but usually work OK. In Control Panel > Phone and Modems > Modem, is the Modem listed and given a com port? You may have the old one as default. Mine has my current modem listed with a com port, and my old one is listed as "not present".

Try removing AT+MS=12,1 from the initializtion string.
