Hi folks,

I have a public folder on Exchange 2003 SP2 where Spam is automatically placed by GFI. Of course, this folder increases exponentially in size and is difficult at best to keep up with. So, I setup limits on the folder to delete all messages older than 15 days. I did this in Exchange System Manager under the following 2 places:
1. My Administrative Group - Folders - Public Folders - Spam - Properties of Spam - Limits. I set Age limit for replicas (days): to 15. Use public store defaults is not checked.
2. My Administrative Group - Servers - My Server - My Storage Group - Public Folder Store - Public Folder Instances - Spam - Replica Properties - I set Age limit of of this folder on this public store (days) to 15. Effective age limit of this folder on this public store (days) is 15.
3. I verified it at My Administrative Group - Servers - My Server - My Storage Group - Public Folder Store - Public Folders - Properties of Spam - Limits and it is 15.

When I go to the Public Folder Instances folder and look at the list. It has a column labeled Removed Older Than it says 12/25/2008 3:00 AM but the folder goes back to 12/24/2008 3:32 PM.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Thanks so much!
Mike

As far as I can tell it does. I get the message sent to the Administrator email address saying:
The Microsoft Exchange Server Mailbox Manager has completed processing mailboxes
Started at: 2009-01-09 18:12:15
Completed at: 2009-01-09 18:12:15
Mailboxes processed: 0
Messages moved: 0
Size of moved messages: 0.00 KB
Deleted messages: 0
Size of deleted messages: 0.00 KB

The application log has:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store
Event Category: General
Event ID: 1206
Date: 1/10/2009
Time: 3:00:05 AM
User: N/A
Computer: xx
Description:
Starting cleanup of items past retention date for Item Recovery on database "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (xx)".

Then:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: MSExchangeIS Public Store
Event Category: General
Event ID: 1207
Date: 1/10/2009
Time: 3:00:08 AM
User: N/A
Computer: xx
Description:
Cleanup of items past retention date for Item Recovery is complete for database "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (xx)".
Start: 165 items; 77350 Kbytes
End: 123 items; 57646 Kbytes

The items in the SPAM folder still go back to 12/24/08 3:32 PM with the Public Folder Instance saying Removed Older Than 12/26/3008 3:15 AM.

Ok, I'm really not sure where to go here... does anybody have any insight to how to troubleshoot this?
Any Exchange logging I can turn up to give clues?
What categories will provide these clues?
What could interrupt maintenance tasks?
It takes 40 minutes for the defrag maintenance task to complete. Is that preventing the cleanup from running since other tasks are scheduled for the next hour?

Thanks for any more help you all can provide!

Mike

If the difference between clean up and actual posts always 36 hours?

No, there is no cleanup... no items get deleted. The mail is STILL at 12/24/08.

Well, I turned up logging on MSExchangeIS - Public - General, Storage Limits, and Replication Expiry.

It is my hope that one of these will assist.

I still see nothing that seems to pertain to this problem.

I get log entries like:

Start: 147 items; 68504 Kbytes
End: 123 items; 57242 Kbytes

I assume the last two are for recover deleted items.

Then it goes into Online Defragmentation messages (all successful).

Anybody have anything to help here??

Mike
