PC had 3 viruses (w32/mtx.9244.worm.a in a e-mail file). PC was cleaned of viruses (safe-mode after reinstalling Command). PC takes about 3 minutes to open Netscape and WPD). IE opens up right away. Can't print and it won't add new printer.

The system performance has significantly decreased. Is reinstallation the answer or can it be avoided?

Thanks.

If the only problem is one or two programs, try reloading thaose programs.

Assuming that does not fix things Take your backup copy of Windows (just joking, no one takes a backup copy of C:\windows except me and two others, but now is when you need it.)

ok,

1. look in Win.INI for Load or RUN under [windows] and repace each line with an empty one saving the old with a semicolon in the first position:

[windows]
run=
;run = badstuff.exe
...

ditto
load=

2. RegEdit and search for runonce.

When you get there you will see some keys that are nearby, run, runservices, ...

They pretty much should be empty. If there is anything in them save them by saving the key, File->Export on the top then delete them.

I hear of one person who renames the keys to things like 'Run-Dont' and 'RunServicesNotToday' ... which is clever and you might want to try that, I have not tried that technique but it should work.

Reboot to DOS

ScanReg /FIX /OPT.

reboot to win.

give it a try.

If that seems to help, pick up RegClean from MS downloads and use that one from Windows. RegClean and ScanReg fix fdifferent things in the Registry, use both.

Tell us what happens.

btb, reinstalling windows has about a 10% chance of fixing things, as the re-install keeps a lot of crap from the drive, things like programs, DLLs, and registry inforamtion. and sometimes decides on its own initiative that you now want problem programs like Personal Web Server and various hazardous scripting languages installed.

That is why in the end you are probably going to reformat the drive, lose all your data as there was not a separate partition for your user data, and then completely reinstall Windows, or buy an XP upgrade.

Think about the marketing, which can you sell more of?

a. an absolutely reliable OS that never, ever ever fails, or

b. One that becoimes unusable after two years of use.

There are ways to make Win98 good for a Century or two, but you have to do a little work, like backups and pruning the registry.

"Is reinstallation the answer"
