after i logon to windows 2000 pro s

after i logon to windows 2000 pro system i am seeing only a blue screen ..i waited long time ..but no result ..so went to taskmanager and new task and i run the exporer.exe then the desktop came..
i applied service pack 3 then no problem..but i want to know why the problem came and how to solve without applying servicepack
could anybody explain me clearly
