(after) effects question

hello,

I'm new with after effects and i'm looking for something (pdf, or whatever) where it explain what each effect is good for.

Like:
Lightning effect > effect #2 in that list
Clouds effect > effect 3# in that list

u know what i'm trying to say?

So if i got a idea, i look up the list and i know that that effect or those effects are good for that.

There are nothing like that. You'd best find a book like Adobe's Classroom in a book series, the After Effects bible. Good time as any to go to the book store.

I don't know if it is what you are looking for but there is a list of every effect available in Chapter 8 of the AE User guide that came with the program.

Quite a useful chapter that for getting to grips with the basics of effects. When you've been through this you will probably benifit loads from one of the AE books like WizyWyg mentioned.
