With After Effecst 6.5, I have a simple wav file that will not play in RAM preview or after clicking on the wav file in the composition and then hitting space bar. It is just silent. When clicking it on in the Library window, it plays fine. I also tried importing it over again in an AIF format with the same problem. When rendering, I chose "video for windows" with "microsoft dv" video format, and make sure the "Audio Output" is checked. After it renders the audio is NOT there. I also tried different video formats with no avail. Anyone have any clue on what the problem might be or what I can try? Thanks in advance.

There are a couple of things that may be happening.

1. Your drives aren't fast enough to just use the "space bar" to play it.

Answer: Use RAM Preview, or Audio Preview (.) to hear the audio.

2. You may not have audio enabled on RAM Preview options

Answer: Cmd/Ctrl-3 to call up the time control windows and edit the button.

3. Your audio is not embedded in your Microsoft/DV format movie although you have "Audio Output" checked.

Answer: The audio track in the composition timeline is not active, or the codec does not support the audio format that you've selected.

CHECK LIST:

If the audio plays in the "library" window, then the original audio file is fine. Make sure you're not referencing an alias of an audio file. Although the file may play well during a check here, it's possible that your computer isn't making the same jump to the original when you're rendering.

Make a successful RAM Preview. If you can hear it in RAM, it's processing the audio, and it will write it to the final movie; unless the codec won't support it.

Last, make sure you're checking the final render in something that has enough gain (just in case your audio is low).
