After Backup Exec stops abnormally, the program does not respond upon

After an abnormal backup which ends up hanging, BEWIN32.EXE does not respond and Backup Exec needs to be re-installed with the consequent loss of existing catalogs. This is a damn nuisance and the Veritas website doesn't show any reference to this glitch. BEWIN.EXE fails to run from both the desktop and the command line.
Anyone can help or shed light on this please ?
