Hello all,
I was just wanting to mention my experience from this weekend.
I'll start by saying, I have never had ANY problems with spyware on a personal pc. That is not saying that I have not helped hundreds of others that have.
This past weekend at a friends house I decided to check my email online useing his pc. What a freakin nightmare! there were so many pop-ups open as soon as i got to the pc that it looked as though the toolbar was almost full (he has DSL). Right then I started bitching to him and he acted as though it was "normal". I did a few seaches for Ad-aware and Spybot and downloaded both. In between I tried checking my mail to no avail. My mailserver is on a url that is pretty long and when clicking "ok" it would bring that "common name" crap that i'd before only heard about. After downloading and installing Ad-aware (also checking up on tek-tips) i ran it successfully. It found what seemed to be hundreds of files to be rid of and so I let it do its thing. Then I restarted the pc and BAM! " would like to access the internet...blah..blah" Thinking this was wierd I installed the newly downloaded spybot, ran it and it too found seemingly hundreds of files and programs. I clicked "fix" or somehting like that it then asked me to select a scan when restart option or something because it couldn't scan what was "already in memory" so I let it. After it reboot i ran it again and it again found an ass load and so on and so on. All I can really say now is "What the hell?!?!?"
I was going to logon to tek-tips once again to get some expert help but by that time I was fed up. I made sure what I had done hadn't blocked any internet service or screwed any settings and WALKED AWAY AND HAD A BEER remembering that it was indeed the weekend and not my pc!
For all of you out there that are having that much problems with spyware/adware, my advise: Format/Restore
While i'm at it i'll go ahead and mention something i was thinking about BEFORE all that crap this weekend. one of us needs to write up a FAQ about spyware being that alot of internet problems now days are being caused by these damn things. The way it looks, it will only get worse.
Death to spyware
