Hi people.

I have been testing the wireless technology, i build a small network for my boss, using 2 WAP54G AP, i setup in bridge mode to extend the signal, is working good and stable.

Now i have another big task, my boss purchase 3 IP cameras(CAM), this CAM has some options to handle his bandwidth, like a network shaping and other settings for this which help a lot.

Now i don't want to add this 3 cameras to the network, because on that building we have most of the clients and those switches already have a lot of work, and another thing, 1 of the cameras is very far from the switch.

Them i prefer to separate those packages from the network, but my only option is to go wireless. I have this layout:

Building 1 Building 2
Antenna 200 mts Antenna
| <-----------------------> |
| |
AP AP
-------------- ------------
| server room | | IP-CAM's |
-------------- ------------

All the data from the cameras at building 2 need to reach building 1, where a dedicated server is going to receive that information and saved, for latter analysis.

I have the top of both buildings (20 mts high), there is nothing that can cause interference or block the signal. I can install the antennas there.

This is new to me, i have read a lot about wireless technology, but from theory to practice is not always the same.

Them i can use 2 AP + 2 antennas to extend the signal.

Now my big doubt here is:

Someone has some experienced and advised me if there a better way to get this task done?
What products i can use to build this network?

The devices i think will be external, they must support the weather in my layout.

Thanks all for your help, hope some could give advised or tips, i will appreciated a lot.

Thanks all for your time.

I know you stated your a small business, but I would seriously take a look at moving from SOHO product line like Linksys to Cisco. Linksys' stuff is good for the home or home office, but their SOHO products just don't seem to hold up under a load (yes that do have business level equipment in their switch line that's pretty good, but not their wireless).

My focus would be on the Cisco 1300 series bridges. They have a package model that's has a built in antenna that's directional, so unless your need to connect in a third building for point to multi-point, your golden. Also, you have one of the bridges act as the root, the other as the non-root bridge and I believe the root will also act as a standard AP (I might have that backwords, it might be the non-root).

Others like 3COM, HP, Orinoco, etc... will also have some good products that are business class level stuff, so you can check them out as well. Best thing though is find a vendor that specializes in wireless to spec and do it right for you the first time and for the most part, it will be something you won't have to worry about thereafter.

As you've stated about the bandwidth, double check the figures for the camera. We have a few and we have seen them chew up 100mbs links with ease !

Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.
