Seems this newbie was tasked to reinstall and configure Solaris 8 on an E450. I was told to do it from scratch (restoring from tape is not an option) and to configure it to closely resemble what it is now. What information should I get from it before I get started?
Thanks, in advance!

you need to know the naming service you currently use (NIS, NIS+, FNS, DNS, files, etc.)

this will be in /etc/nsswitch.conf

you need the hostname, and it's IP address (or whether it is a DHCP client on not)
you also need to know if and what non standard services it runs (DHCP server, 3rd party servers, etc.)

if your system is running from files, you'll need the group, passwd, shadow, hosts, aliases, resolv.conf files

if it is connected to a modem you will need /etc/uucp/* basically

you will probably also want /etc/mail/sendmail.cf if it is non standard.

hope this 'little' list helps.
