I posted this on the HP Forum but as yet have failed to get a reply.

I would really like some advice:

I very recently fitted a 610N card into my LJ4100 printer. I have used HP software to install the printer on the network and to upgrade the firmware of the card.

Since fitting the card I have had numerous 49 4C02 errors on the printer and this seems connected to:

Not switching off the printer long enough between reboots.
Leaving the network cable plugged in whilst doing cold resets.
Accessing the embedded web server to configure settings.

I did have my DHCP router asssigning a reserved address to the card but after reading another post decided to give the card a static address.

I have even had it all working only to find that the printer was waiting for manual intervention to use tray 2 instead of closed manual tray 1, when all tray settings were on "auto".

A further reset sorted this.

By trial and error it would seem that to do a cold reset the network cable must be unplugged and switching off and unplugging is mandatory afterwards (for a few minutes).

It is currently all working (including the embedded web server).

I was previously using this printer with a Netgear print server but wanted the extra functionality of an internal / fully compatible HP product.

So where am I going wrong - I can't find any mention of these problems on the HP site under Jetdirect 610N.

What about the printer f/w ? I would disable the jetdirect web server. You can Telnet to the card & configure. Better yet,use HP Webjet Admin to administer your HP printers. The web page on the jetdirect card is a BIG security hole.

When performing a cold reset, you should REMOVE the Jet Direct card. Otherwise, you could have problems. You shouldn't have to unplug the machine afterwards. What I do is: Remove Jet Direct and any other extra peripherals (Hard Drive, etc...), perform Cold Reset, when printer comes to ready power off, install everything (Jet direct, etc...) Power on, and you should be good to go. I hope this helps. Have a nice day!!!

Rick,

Thanks for the reply. As you are probably aware the firmware of the printer is not flashable and naieve as I am surely Jetdirects were around before the printer was marketed.

Scary words, but I am not too concerned about security as it is on a home network with two laptops and a desktop sitting behind a router firewall and Zonealarm.

Unless I go to the expense of purchasing printer firmware I guess I should console myself that it is all presently working.

I was sort of wondering if this was par for the course. I was expecting better of HP especially after spending a long time getting to grips with Netgear print servers and their often strange ways.

Once again thanks for taking the time to reply.

Bisawest,

That is certainly a permutation I have not tried. I was cold restting both intentionally but as I now have the Jetdirect configured and "working" I will do as you suggest in the future if the need arises.

I must admit after doing the reset the embedded web server is certainly not available straight away and trying to access it soon after reset is definately one way to bring about the printer error I mentioned. It is one of the reasons I have been resetting and then unplugging for upwards of ten minutes.
