Advice on writing queries

Hi experts. could an expert tell me what it the best practice in starting writing a queries? should i first write it in paper then run it in sql server ? Furthermore, could an expert tell me a quide line on how to takle a query ?Thanks

no paper...

start writing simple queries on test tables on live database...

see and analyze the results for each query you try...

and practice a lot..
