My company is setting up 5 commerical homepages which include B2B, E-Commerce services. I know nothing much about setting up webservers but unfortunately have been placed the task of doing the proposal. Boohoo! Anyways I would REALLY appreciate it if anyone could give me some advice on what I should do.
1. How many webservers would be recommended for the housing of these 5 commercial homepages? I was thinking probably of 3? (Dual-P3 systems probably with 9.1GB SCSI HDD running on NT4.0 and using IIS4.0)
2. Does anyone have recommendations of hardware servers? My company is currently looking at HP Netservers/IBM Webservers. Any recommedations of good models which are more suitable for web-hosting needs?
3. What hardware load balancers would be the recommended (for ease, efficiency) for use with these webservers? I currently have the F5 in mind.
4. Would server clustering of these 3 webservers be a good idea? or considering that if one extra server was filled with the information of all 5 webpages, and the other 2 went down, services would automatically take over and sites would be loaded from there? I guess I'm just try to ensure that in times of emergencies, there's another backup plan to keep these webpages going. Are there any other recommended options/plans?
5. Would anyone happen to have a flow chart of the whole webserver process? From the host till probably the end-user surfing on the net. It would be really helpif you could email it to me.
6. Other than the setting up of firewalls, am I still missing out on anything important that needs to be set up?
Would really appreciate it if anyone out there could give advice.
Many Thanks in Advance.
Gene
