I need to use an old Compaq Presario with Windows Me in another location. The Disc Drive burned out. I am assuming I can buy a cheap, external drive that hooks into the USB Port, so I can re-load my 2007 version of Norton SystemWorks and other programs I need to run on this jealopy. First, what is the generic term for the product I'm looking for (I don't need to burn DVDs or anything like that) ? What are the better cheaper ones ?

Thank you

You mean the hard drive burned out? or the Cd-Rom drive burned out of the old Compaq Presario?

The term for external hard drives, is just that External Hard Drives. However i would not put much hope in running System Works 2007 on Windows ME. Besides the fact the hardware would probably not be able to handle it, I'm almost sure System Works 2007 is designed for Win2000 and above at least.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

First, all you will need is a 500MB-1GB USB flash drive. Copy the CD's contents to the flash drive on a PC with a working CD-ROM. Then you can run the program from the flash drive. I have SystemWorks 2001 & 2002, they both can be run from the disk without installing the program, my method of choice. Don't know about newer versions, they might need activation.

CD-ROM drives are incredibly cheap and it's always good to have a spare...an external USB CD-ROM will cost much more than replacing the original IDE-ATAPI drive, it will also be much slower.
