Which anti-virus software that does not take up much overhead? I am run a client-server application at the server and it is using much of the computation power, at the task mgr. its most of time above 50% on the processors processes. But at the same time I want to load some kind anti-virus protection on the network.
Thanks in advance...

Here is my 2 cents worth. We use Sophos Sweep and Intercheck. They have a small footprint and don't seem to take up any CPU time. Sophos runs best in a mixed enviroment since it supports NT, NetWare, Unix, etc., etc.. You get monthly updates plus free access to their hotline. They also supply quick updates via the web if a new virus comes out before they can get it on their monthly CD. It also seems to be very thorough. Your client-server enviroment should work very nicely.
On the downside, I have heard people say that it is hard to administer but I haven't found that to be the case. They are also not cheap (but it's cheaper than getting a virus).
See their web site at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> or see <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> .

I use Norton Anti Virus Solution Suite. Works on PCs, Macs, Novell etc but not Linux. You get complete control of the anti virus part of the clients, can download off the internet to the main server and then propogate around the network. etc. Does everything automatically when set up correctly. Takes a while to get the hang of it. Does not seem to fill up our server too badly proc wise either.
Does cost $50 per seat though (roughly).

We're using Norton. We run it on all our servers and clients. The liveupdate feature is convenient for getting signature updates. You can also distribute updates to your client across your network, and get admin emails when viruses are caught. It's relatively easy to configure.
So far, Norton has intercepted hundreds of different viruses on our network. After a couple initial configuration quandries, it's running well (we called Norton once).

How did you set yours up exactly? Exactly which apps did you install on each client and server? Did you put load it to your email server or another and what service pack are you running on your NT box that does the central serving? Also did you share your desktop clients in Windows?

I ask cos we are going to redo our entire Solution Suite install cos we got a virus past our suite onto the servers and the desktops that REALLY hurt us. It was a lovely one that deleted every file on the hard disk until the OS fell over. Reboot and there are only a handful of files left.
Guess that means that I didn't do it right, so I must have missed something blindingly obvious...

I personally use McAfee, it's been consistanly the most up to date and user friendly, with as little overhead as possible. We have also been real lucky, a combination of care and McAfee is my view and not been bitten once yet...

Every server has Norton AV for NT servers. On the exchange box, we ALSO have Norton AV for Exchange server running (that's actually 2 diff versions on the one box). All the clients have Norton 9X or Norton for NT wkstn running, as well.

We keep the virus signatures updated with live update on the servers, and we download the signature packages to distribute to our client pc's with the Norton System Commander that comes with the AV enterpise edition.

It sounds paranoid to run the AV on EVERY box in house, but we've had episodes where the virus slipped past the servers and then got caught at the client workstation.
