Just finished college, have got a job where my responsibilities will include, DW reporting and oracle manufacturing, and the responsibilities will grow as the company is just switching to an all oracle system. I dont know a whole pile about things yet but am learning somthing new everyday,

So the question what is it like? Am i able for the role ( i was never a great programmer in college). What are the best things i can do to get real good at the job and what is the best(fastest route to gaining the DBA certification?

Any help would be gratly appreciatated

Thanks

Hi,

Well - Welcome to Oracle then <smile>.

You could do worse than monitor the Tek-Tips Oracle forums (keep an eye on the Oracle 5/6/7 as most issues that come up are not version specific).

When I started with Oracle I bought the book "Oracle the complete Reference" which, while being far from complete, is very good.

First thing to do, I suggest, is look at the Server Concepts book in the Oracle Documentation. Leave the certification for six months - you'll get more out of it if you leave it for a while.
Mike
michael.j.lacey@ntlworld.com
<a href= Cargill's Corporate Web Site
My advice would be to avoid the back end of Manufacturing (& all Oracle Applications) like the plague and focus on the warehousing side. Ora Apps DBAs make decent $ but it's not a very exciting job (can be summarized as step 1: create TAR on MetaLink, step 2: run adpatch, step 3: go to step 1). If you're serious about becoming OCP then without question the best preparation (in lieu of experience, of course :) is the NETg CBT series for OCP. They're not cheap but the tests are almost verbatim from them (at least they were when I took them) and if you're a newbie you'll actually learn a lot too. I would suggest that you have a play instance/database available as you do the CBTs though as there's no substitute for having actually pushed the buttons.
