adverts on web pages asking me to login.

I have a mesh pc runing windows xp with all the latest service packs. But I get a strange problem which I am unable to find any info on the web about.

I have both IE6 and Mozila 1.6 install on the same machine. But when I go to a lot of web pages with adverts. The browser will come up and asking me to log into the advert with a user name and password. This happens on both browers.

Can anyone help me as it is getting very anyoying having to cancel each one which appears. I do not wish to use a advedrt blocker. Althoug this may get round the problem it will not fixed the root of it. I have another machine with same confiuration all though running windows server 2003 and I get no problems on this one.

I have no doubt that you have some sort of spyware. Do the reading and use the tools mentioned in these: faq608-4650 & faq608-3482

I wish it was spyware but alias it is not. I use ad-ware on a regular basis and always check for new updates at least once a week. I work in the it industry I am fully aware fo the need to keep your machine secure and free from junk. Having scoured the web I have found nothing about this problem before. Just to give you some expamples If I got to netscape.co.uk there adverts ask me to login. The same goes for the tffo.co.uk (Telegraph Fantasy football site). Thnaks for you reply all the same. If anyone else has any idears it would be much appreciated.

Tools, Internet Options, Security, Internet, Custom Level, scroll to the bottom and try an alternative User Authentication setting.

I took a look at the settings you mention they are set the same on both machines but one works and one does not.

I did however change the one which was not working properly to anonymous in this field and this solved the probelm.

Can anyone tell me why changint this setting on pc stops adverts asking for a password where on another it works fine with out changing.

The only different I can see is that one is running on xp(one not working properly) and the other is working on server 2003.

I will have to now look into how to change a similar setting on mozila. Which I use a lot.

I would like to understand what the funciton is doing as I have never come across a problem like this before.
