My Microsoft Updates Sync advertisement has not run in a couple of months nor has the Advertisement status indicated that it has encountered any errors. I added a new run-now schedule, and then after a few hours after that didn't work I set it to run 30 min from now. But still nothing has run. The Advertisement Status window only notes that I made changes to the advertisement.

Naturally because the Microsoft Updates Sync advertisement has not run I have not been able to download new patches yet … and it’s that time of the quarter for me!

What logs should I be looking at to determine why this advertisement has not kicked off?

Thanks,
Mike Day

When you installed it did you set it to automagically download or do you have to manually download the cab files?

and I guess... is the sync tool advertised to your server?

i don't recall if i did ask it to manually download the cab file although i would think i did. But from your statement i should be able to dl it manually if i run into problems like this with the advertisement.

What's the name of the cab file and where does it go?

Also ... could i just re-install the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates to ensure it downloads automatically?

Yes, the sync tool is advertised to the site server.

on the server check the patchdownloader.log in %sys32%\ccm\logs which will tell you if its actually downloading the new patches.

The patchinstall.log will indicate what is going on with patchinstallation.

scanwrapper.log...

Neither of those logs indicate any problem. I think it might be a problem in the way the advertisement was created but I don't want to fix that right now. I need to be able to download the cab file manually so i can create a test my packages.

I thought I just did. I did a search for cab files on the date i installed the ITMU. I found out that the wsusscan.cab was downloaded the day before so i downloaded a new version and replaced the other versions in 4 other places on the server that I had found it. I then ran the "Microsoft Updates Tool' so it would scan all of the clients against this file but the new patches are not showing up in the Software Updates section of the Administration console so I must be missing some step?
