I am trying to set up a folder to allow a group to create and edit files, rename them, copy, execute, etc. but not delete.

I have the share set to allow full access. The folder permissions are set via Advanced to allow everything except Delete, Delete Subfolders, Change Permissions and Take Ownership.

Everything is working perfectly except the users cannot rename the files. I get the same "disk is write protected" error I get on a delete attempt.

I know that Rename doesn't copy a file and delete the original, but I'm thinking that it might create the new file name entry in the file table then "delete" the old name.

In any case, has anyone ever tried this?

I've done some furter experimentaiton and it certainly looks like you can't deny Delete withour also denying Rename.

Unless someone has any suggestions, I'm going to consider myself defeated.

You have to have the DELETE right in order to modify files as tmp files are created/deleted during each modification. The best you can do is to add the CREATOR OWNER right with delete access that way only the owner of the file can delete that file

Actually I can edit and resave all I want. The only thing I can't do is change the name. I think it's going to depend on the application as to whether or not tmp files are needed and wether or not the temp files are in the same folder.

When I first started experimenting, I figured out the CREATOR OWNER permissions part. Problem is, the creators are the most important group to be disallowed delete.

I think I'm going to have to come up with a Plan B to handle all my requiremets.
