I currently have a small lan configured. It consists of 1 win2k server and 18 win2k desktops. The server is setup with AD, DHCP, and DNS (also the DC). I now have been handed another problem...a new ADSL line that uses PPPoE. I was told that I was getting a static IP to work with and was set to use NAT, but as far as I know this will not work and also ICS will not work from a server that is running DNS and DHCP. If I am wrong, the solution is appreciated. If it would be of better sence to install NAT on a seperate box running only win2k server, will this cause conflict with my already configured and running LAN? The easiest solution to this PPPoE sharing issue will help...If I am too vauge please ask what needs to be asked

first double check with your isp if it will work with Alcatel protocol, then get a 827 Cisco router
it will solve all your problem, without getting two nic for your server and it uses NAT and DHCP as well

I also have a similar problem if anyone can help me, too.

I have a box with Win2K Server also running AD, DHCP, and DNS. The box has five Ethernet adaptors. Previously I had an AT&T cable modem connection that was pretty easy to setup - cable modem connected to public IP ethernet adaptor and local network hub connected to private (i.e. 192.168.16.2) ethernet adaptor. Very easy. Unfortunately I moved and now I can only get ADSL through Ameritech. They supplied me with five static IP's and the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem (the funky green one) and I'm having trouble getting a connection to my machine.

The steps I've taken so far are:

1) Setup Win2K Server.
2) Install Alcatel modem drivers.
3) Plug in modem to USB port (both lights turn green).
4) Install Enternet 300 software with setup disk Ameritech gave me.

When I try to connect by clicking on the Enternet icon I just get a 'Contacting Server...' message and eventually get a timeout. What I think is weird is that the Enternet install creates a virtual ethernet adaptor that always gives the status of "Unplugged". Is this the problem? Do I need to bind this virtual adaptor to the USB port somehow?

I've read elsewhere in these forums about how Enternet stinks and that the Alcatel USB modem is also not the greatest on dual processer boxes so I would welcome any suggestions as to what setups I should switch to. I'm very close to going to the store to see what kind of ADSL modem I can pick up that will connect directly to my ethernet card on my server so I can get this running very easily. I'd prefer not to have Enternet on my server and to use an ethernet modem rather than USB. If I get a new ADSL modem will I need to get a one-port router between the modem and ethernet card to handle the static IP's and logon info or can I do that in Win2K somehow?

Basically, I want to get the configuration so it's my ADSL line going into the public ethernet interface to my server, and my local network hub going to my private ethernet interface so I can just plug all my client machines into my hub and use my server as a proxy.

Any help you could give is much appreciated.

Thanks.

go to here
and download the driver for pppoe and use it
forget about your ethernet 300, cause problem

or you can use a dsl router, if it use Alcatel protocol then Cisco 827 works well, then you don't need to do all this, just configure your router to work, Cisco 827 has built-in modem as well

if you got 5 static ip's the router should have been setup as a bridge. this giving you the ability to defined your staic pc's and or setting up an external router then running NAT “Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”

For Canada, we only use PPPoE on 1 Meg circuit, Full Rate will be what you are talking about, even static IP are still PPPoE

only Full Rate would be straight thru

Thanks for the tips but I'm still having a helluva time getting the USB modem to work correctly. I reinstalled everything clean and still can't get Enternet to connect. When I install Enternet it installs the PPPoE service and a virtual ethernet adaptor but that ethernet adaptor always shows as "unplugged" so I think there's a problem there. If anyone happens to have explicit directions on how to configure Win2K Server with Alcatel SpeedTouch USB and Enternet 300 I'd appreciate you sharing them with me.

Basically I'm starting to think my life would be easier if I went out and bought a DSL modem that connected directly to an ethernet card along with a one port router to handle the PPPoE logon duties. Would this setup work? I want to avoid a multi-port router as I'd like all my client machines to have to go through my server to the internet for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for the help.

To clarify my last post, here's what I'd like to do:

***
|
|
| <--ADSL line in
|
|
|###| <--Linksys 1 port router*
|
|
|
|###| <--Win2K Server "public" ethernet card**
|###|
|###| <--Win2K Server
|###|
|###| <--Win2K Server "private" ethernet card***
|
|
|
|###| <--Linksys 8 port hub****
|
|
|-------> All client machines

* - The one port router would be configured with the public IP address assigned to me by my ISP. All my public services (email, web hosting, ftp) would be available at this address - i.e. say my IP is 67.67.67.67 - if someone browses to they'll get to the router.

** - Ethernet card connected to the router. What would the IP of this be? Could I just assign it a local IP such as 192.168.16.5? How do services like web hosting work then? Does the router simply pass through all non-blocked requests to this ethernet card?

*** - Card that's connected to my hub with a private IP such as 192.168.16.2. This is where all client machines interface with the server.

**** - Hub to plug all LAN connections from client machines into.

Well, I guess what I'm asking flat out is if this will work. I don't want to plunk down the $$$ for a router and new DSL modem if this idea is not do-able.

Thanks,

same goes with a friend of mine, those usb doesn't work right, half of the time, if you do get it working, it run slower than a straight modem

if you buy a modem, make sure your modem with work with the dslam card on the other end, your phone company's card
