I'm getting confused with the whole ADSL thing. NTL has adsl services in the UK but is this a totally different network to BT???? If you are buying an ADSL system from NTL are they effectively an intermediary from BT. Or have they got a totally different domain to the BT one?

Does my post make sense or have I got terminology wrong?

Thanks

Chris

Most ADSL providers re-sell BT's ADSL. If your local loop is BT's you will most likely connect to the BT ADSL network before your traffic is routed to your ISP. Your calls have to go through BT exchanges and phone system and then ADSL gateway (DSLAM)on route to your ISP.

The exception is this is non-BT areas such as Hull. Hulls ADSL users buy ADSL directly from Kingston Communications, so the exchange, digital voice network, DSLAM, network and everything is KC's.

Yes this is what I was thinking.

However when looking at NTLworld I understand they have their own infrastructure right up to your house or business. If you have ADSL from them then they wouldn't be re-sellers unless of course the DSLAM (is that a NAP?) is on a BT exchange.

So as long as you go through a BT exchange to get to your ISP BT are really your service provider (Or is this comming to a matter of opinion?).

I think I understand your ISP is going to be attached to some other ISP and this would be some high speed backbone of some sort. It stands to reason the information has to get to your ISP as long as you don't use another carrier to get to this ISP you are not a re-seller.

NTL might be an exception but a majority of ISP's that are offering ADSL are re-selling BT's! I don't know the details of NTLs network but they're big enough to run their own xDSL network I suppose.

I've discovered that in this country BT are the only network to provide ADSL at their exchanges.

NTL does not support this. NTL offers cable modem like many american companies. What this means is that the same cable that gives you digital TV will also offer data services at a different frequency. I think that whereas ADSL uses the old twisted pair copper telephone wire the cable modem uses fibre optics right up to your door step. Please write back if I am wrong.

Except Kingston Communications in Hull of course! Hull is a non-BT area and so KC run their own ADSL network.
