Hi

I am setting up a small network and am having problems with the ADSL link. The network consists of 2 Windows 2000 servers and 12 people. I am using DHCP for leasing the IP addresses. The ADSL router is connected to the network via a 16 port Netgear switch.

It seems that some people can connect to the Internet while other cannot. Sometimes people will connect to the Internet and suddenly loose connection. Does anybody how I can get all the people to use the Internet all of the time?

Cheers

Mick

If you are using a dynamic IP address from the ISP, check to make sure that it's not changing often. If it is, then that might explain the frequent disconnects. At that point, I would check for static or interference in the line.

If that's not it, test it with only 2 PC's connected and work your way up. See if there is one particular number of PC causing the issue.

Also make sure all client users pc's are setup for auto negotiation for speed and duplex and are "not" hardcoded . Who is supplying the addresses to the clients , the netgear or something else .

If you have 2 2000 servers who is surplying the DHCP the ADSL router or the 2000 Servers, can't be both on same network.

Thanks for all replys. Further information is below:

All IP address's comes from the Networks DHCP server and DHCP has been de-selected on the router

Client disconnection happens randomly. There are no PCs that have not connected to the Internet at some time.

The Public IP address is static

Could the problem be with the Netgear router? Could it be limiting the number of connections out to the Internet?

Hope this furhter information helps

Cheers

Michael

Might also consider that a machine on your network is infected with blaster or something like that and is killing you connection. Monitor network traffic and look for an infected machine. Take a look at the following link for a free download.

Hope this helps.... : )

If you are running ADSL on a shared line, make sure that the office is not subscribing to Centrex service from the telephone company as this will randomly knock ADSL off line

I agree with JOAMON. You could try to download Adaware SE or/and Spybot to each PC to check for malware.
Also, you might want to narrow the DHCP pool in the Netgear to something just above the # of your client devices or seriously consider hardcoding each PC statically behind the netgear. What's your speedtest like on a random sample of the PCs? What's it like at the netgear?

Don't forget to check the simple things too! If all the client machines are running ie make sure that "never dial a connection" is selected on the connections tab of internet options. Make sure the connections are being dropped instead of timing out (do the dropped connections happen when you have all twelve clients trying to be online? A 768/256 or 768/384 line couldn't handle this many machines without timing out or dropping a connection or 2). Etc.
Too often we forget that little things can cause big problems!
