Hi

I have a Broadband/ADSL connection to a Win ME machine, via a USB MODEM and dial-up adapter.
I wish to share this Internet connection with a second WinME system, connected via a simple network comprised of 2 Ethernet 10/100 NICs and CAT5 crossover cable.

I am currently unable to obtain any network connectivity between the two machines, both with Internet Connection Sharing, and without (in order to get just the network working first). All the required TCP/IP protocols are present as are File Sharing and Client for MS networks.

I have set the IP addresses of the 2 computers as:
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2

respectively, with 0.1 as the Internet connecting system.
Each PC can PING itself, but not the other. As far as I know all hardware is OK, being brand new!

If any one can offer suggestions as to the cause of the problem I would be grateful!
Do I need a different OS ie Win2k or XP as a definite requirement?
Should the hardware I have work and provide me with the setup I require?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Assuming it really is a cross-over cable (the NICS show lights for the connection, for example) the issue is almost certainly a firewall. Watch out for "hidden" firewalls in antivirus software; PC-Illan is famous for doing this.

Having sorted the firewall issue, the next problem is the use of Static IPs under ICS. It would be easier to allow Windows to assign both IPs, and all Gateway and DNS values. This is particularly true of the ICS Host, which must be at 192.168.0.1. There is several other things that happen behind the scenes. This article describes the changes to the HOSTS file, the DNS advanced settings, and the Workgroup naming:

Internet Connection Sharing CAN work, but there are potential problems. Do yourself a favor and buy a router with switch now - you are looking at about $60 and you will end up doing it eventually anyway!

There's no reason why the hardware and os you have shouldn't work. I agree with bcastner in that either your cable is not a crossover, or there's a firewall impeding the connection.

However, having said that, sometimes ics doesn't work with 192.168.0.1/2, you're better off setting ip addresses to 192.168.0.1 (gateway) and 192.168.0.254.
