Hi all

I have a router which connects to the Internet via ADSL. The ATM, Dialer and Virtual-Access interfaces have had no bandwidth configuration done on them, they are set to whatever they are in default.

I have just run a bandwidth tester from a PC on the local network to measure our up/down speeds and the results back are saying the down speed is around 388Kbps and the up speed is 266kbps. There are no users on the network currently either connected via VPN or downloading any files from the Internet.

Also, the Solarwinds network monitor software states that the port and transmit speed on the ATM0/0 interface is 288kbps, the same for ATM0/0.0 atmsubif and ATM0/0.0-aal5 layer interfaces. Dialer 1 shows 56kps port and transmit speed and the Virtual-Access 3 interface (bound to dialer 1) is also 56kbps

This does not seem right to me at all!! Apparently (according to our crappy ISP) we have 2Mb download and 256 upload

Can anyone shed any light on this? Do I need to specify bandwidth settings on any of the above interfaces using the (config-if)#bandwidth <bandwidth> command

Thanks for any suggestions in advance

For modt of the 2Mbps ADSL services offered by ISP's the upload speed is 288Kpbs. Issue the command 'show dsl interface atm x' where 'x' is your DSL ATM interface. On the 2nd page of the output you should have Upload & Download speeds that have been negotiated with the DSLAM. Mine reads 7872 Download and 448 Upload. If I also show the ATM interface (show interface atm0) it tells me the bandwidth is 448Kbps, unfortunately it doesn't have different upstream/downstream speeds, however this is only used when calculating statistics or routing metrics, it doesn't affect the actual download speeds.

Check out some of the DSL Speed check sites on the internet to see what your actual download speeds are.

I use ManageEngine's NetFlow Analyser and this incorrectly displays the bandwidth as 448Kbps for the interface, however there is an option to overide the discovered bandwidth settings.
