Hello

I have an ADSL connection which have been using an router to split itself to different computers.

However the router (Dlink 704) is in for reparation. And I bought a Netgear 802.11b Wireless Access Point.
Which I tried to connect with a straight TP-cabel to the ADSL modem.

But it doesn´t work..

Do I have to have the Dlink router between the modem and the access point?

Thanks in advance..

Hi bompa
Some routers need to be connect to other hosts by eth cross-cable. So you should first check an ethernet links on the connected devices and cable connections. Next I think the wireless AP should have the same IP subnet on both wireless and cable interfaces, because it works like one of the network components without router functions.

If it won't help, write more details please

Regards

Is there more than one computer on the network? If so, this won't work. For only 1 computer, you would have to set the network paramters of your computer the same as you had your router set for (depending on the 'flavor' of ADSL). As far as the connection between the ADSL modem and the access point - it depends. You may need a crossover cable, or if your access point has an uplink port, try that with a straight through cable. But, as I said, if your PC does not have the same settings as your router it won't work. Also keep in mind that this setup would leave you wide open to the internet, so make sure you have a firewall running.

Also your accesspoint may need to support PPPoE. That is your AP may need to be act as th PPPoE client. I say this with the assumption that most DSL services now require logging in with a username/password and dynamic IP address assignment (as opposed to always on DSL service of old).

Make sure your AP supports PPPoE and make sure it is configured for such.
