Howdy,

I think I know what the problem is. Here's the situation, and lucky me! One of my three domain controllers in the forest that I am upgrading from W2K to Windows 2003 is offline due to a bad motherboard which will be replaced on Monday (GRRRR!, just happened too, GRRRR!).

I am getting an error message of: 0x208d. I suspect this is because one of three domain servers (not the global catalogue server) is off line.

Could this be causing me the grief I am having trying to start the upgrade?

Thanks!

We're going to need more information. Does this error happen when you run forestprep or domain prep. Are you running forestprep on your schema master? If you have gotten to domainprep are you running that on the infrastructure master? Does the server that is offline hold any FSMO roles?

Can you post the adprep.log contents? It may give a little more info on the 0x208d error, which can mean different things.

Thank you for your response. The server is the schema master. I ran into this problem when running adprep /forest. Since my happy server went off line right before I started, I assumed the problem may be related to a domain server that is now offline and unfortunately will not be backup until Monday (needs a new motherboard).

I will add to the post tomorrow with a snapshop of the error message. I figure the problem is likely that a domain server is off line, and I guess I might as well hold off until Monday (kind of screws up my schedule though).

Thank you!

You need to run forestprep on the schema master. So yeah, if it's offline, adprep will fail. But even if it is online and you run forestprep on a different server, it will still fail.
