I have developed an application for my company to manage the sales function. I used an Access 2003 front End and the MSDE back-end. My question is regarding deployment and licenses. All development work was performed on my laptop, so now I have a FE/BE on my laptop. How do I deploy this application to 50 plus users? Do I upgrade MSDE to SQL Server proper? If so, how is this done. And what Client Access Licenses are needed? I really do not want the expense of SQL Server Enterprise. Can anyone tell me what my options are. Thanks in advance.

I haven't failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that it won't work!

Just distribute MSDE with your application. If they've got a license for Access they've got a license for MSDE. Doing an MSDE install takes about three minutes, and can be done in a script, if you want.

I didn't deal with this part of it, but someone else on my team did it, and it seemed pretty dead simple. Check Books On Line, or just the msde site at ms (sorry, I don't have the link).

Thanks - with MSDE on each Client, will the users share the same data or have their own version of the data? I want to deploy a single database where the data is accessed by various users with certain view rights. With a centralized system, my company can take a global view of the data while the users concentrate on what is going on in their world?

No need to put MSDE on each machine.

The front end goes on the desktop, MSDE goes on a box that will be the server. The front ends all connect to the one instance of MSDE.

Thanks again - so if I understand you correctly, I install MSDE only once on a server and the clients do not need MSDE licenses! When the project loads on the client, it will connect to the server database. Do I have this right?

Yup, that's it, mostly. It's not going to connect automatically, unless the FE copy you're distributing is already pointed to the correct spot, but yeah, that's the basic trick.

And as for licenses for MSDE, as I said, anyone who can legally use access can legally use MSDE, for free, no less.
