Hi folks, I am new to this forum (and indesign) and wonder if anyone can help with this basic problem i have.
I have AdobeIndesign CS v3 on a windows XP machine.

I have imported Adobe Illustrator CS drawings into the indesign doc and they work fine using File-Place.

I can't get Photoshop jpg's to work though.
I used File Place to import jpg's which are around 2000px1000p in size but each only appears as a thumbnail in indesign. I thought this might be a screen display problem only but when I export to PDF I get the same problem.

I must be missing something basic here- any suggestions would be great!

I have added a screenshot of the thumbnail graphic as it appears in indesign- hope this works!

If these images are truly 2000px1000p then you simply have a scale problem which can be adjusted easily in InDesign.

InDesign may not be reading the physical dimensions (those which say how many inches tall and wide the image should be). If these images were saved as TIFF files, InDesign would recoognize their physical dimensions. You can continue to use JPG, but you will have to manually stretch them to your expected size in InDesign.

Use the white arrow tool in the tool box to enlarge the image within the frame. Use the black arrow tool and control keys to scale the image and the frame together.

Hi Jimoblak, thanks for the reply.
I tried what you said (dragging out the image within the frame with the arrow tool) but all I get is a blocky pixelated explosion of the thumbnail. Its as if the File - Place command has a setting to import the graphic as a thumbnail rather than the full size- although the links window tells gives me the full size ie 697kb for the jpg and 7MB for the TIF.

I have tried TIF, PSD, and jpg now all with the same effect.

Help please- this is bugging me now !!

Have you right clicked on the stetched image to set the display to high quality?

thank you that was it. It was embarrasingly simple and thanks for your help. I thought I had tried this already but perhaps not.

Make sure you haven't inadvertedly saved the jpgs as 'progressive', And just a hint, don't use jpg's, use psd's or tif's - jpgs are a format for the web, not professional printing.

Professional printing? Are you implying that InDesign is only used for print: not interactive PDF files? [bigsmile]

No - that's why I suggested it as a hint if he was using it for professional printing.
