Adobe type 1 fonts

Hi,
I'm new. Just starting out w/ Illustrator.

1. do I need Adobe Type Manager in order to install Type 1 fonts on Windows PC?

2. i have PS fornts on one CD but I don't know if they are Type 1 or 3. Is there a way to tell before installing them?
