We have an application that exports reports as pdf files. Certain machines that are running Win 98 and Adobe Reader 6, can open the report, but when printed, prints with symbols instead of the arial font. My machine is xp with AR 6 and I have no issues.

On the machines where it doesn't print properly, if we uninstall AR 6 and install AR 5.5, they have no issue.

If you haven't already...

Send fonts to the PDF. That way they are imbedded in the document and there should be fewer issues with operating system versions as long as the reader is the proper version.

Good luck.

We use a third party application to create the pdf files (application reads Crystal Reports then exports reports to pdf), so we can't change the way they are created. However, some machines can print the report fine, but others cannot. Adobe 5.5 and below print the report fine on those workststations where Adobe 6 cannot. It seems to be specific to the version of Adobe. If we cannot control the way that the pdf is created, can we change the way Adobe prints ie print report as image, so that it does not need the fonts in order to print?

You might look at the preferences or setting for the pdf creation app and see if there's not a setting for something like "embed all fonts". The problem with fonts in pdfs is usually caused by lack of embedding so Reader is looking for a font on the computer and cannot find it. Theoretically the users with the problem could be running into font mapping difficulties.

You could also go to the website for Crystal reports and see if there are updates to be compatible with the present Reader.

Of course, you can just stick with 5.5. As long as it works you should be ok. Changes invilved in Reader usually allow it to be more compatible with PDFs created from Adobe Acrobat - with additional bells and whistles. If you don't have pdfs with those bells and whistles, 5 just migh be fine.
