Looking for the right book on Adobe Photoshop which can offer detail on how to create a transparant image over the image beneath, a book which gets immediatly to the point and gives plain instruction on what tools should be used.

The best selling book I believe is the PHOTOSHOP WOW ! BOOK by Jack Davis. Not sure which version it's at. I have the P/Shop 7 version. It's not the cheapest book but a good investment. It comes with a CD containing a load of effects presets which have saved me a lot of time. If you can give more detail of you 'transparent image' requirement, I'm sure this forum can give you a straightforward explanation/tutorial.
 
Photoshop Bible is also good. Very readable.
